I’ll admit I don’t know much about astrology, but I’m always up for a challenge when it comes to a new design. Â The above piece was created as a gift for Alan’s coworker ~ a lovely woman who had a penchant for pointing out that Mercury was in retrograde whenever a major system broke down. Â (Alan the Pragmatic noted that Mercury must have been in retrograde alot, and has since changed jobs for one where things stay a bit more aligned.) Â
In scientific terms, “retrograde” is where a celestial body appears to change direction, when in reality it is just moving at a different relative speed. Â Kinda like two kids riding bikes, when one passes the other. Â When they’re both riding in elipses. Â While hula hooping. Â (You can see where the chaos comes in to the equation.) Â I had to read about it five times and I’m still not totally sure I have it right. Â Needless to say, the early astronomers who were still arguing the mechanics of the solar system didn’t have it quite figured out either, until Giovanni Cassini traced the paths of Mercury and Venus for several years to create the illustration above. Â Ironically, Cassini’s drawing ended up proving a theory he did not accept, so he made something up instead. Â
Speaking of spacing out and making things up, it’s the Young One’s birthday! Â She has reached adulthood just as the Voyager satellite has reached the edge of the solar system. Â Both are now chillin’ in interstellar space. Â Coincidence? Â I think not.
Until next time, hug your loved ones and embrace the chaos~Â
