A Letter to the Universe

I Wrote the Universe a Letter

I’ve missed a  newsletter, perhaps you’ve noticed — likely not, but I have a good excuse which I’ll tell you anyway.

I’ve met someone.
His name is Alan.

Yes to all of your questions.
(He is employed)
(He opens doors for me)
(And for at least one of you, yes, he passed the green beans to me first.)
(it’s possible that question was lingering in at least a few more minds)

Yes to all of the questions you won’t ask:
(Yes, he is charming)
(Yes, so good looking)
(Yes, truly.  Many times yes.)

How did you meet?
I wrote the Universe a letter.  Took a deep breath, put thoughts to screen.
(Had I known the Universe was prone to responding, I would have written years ago)
Details are unimportant.  A friend introduced us.   This is the story I’m telling my daughter, anyway.

How long have you known each other?
Three weeks.  Plus a lifetime.
Such a short time.
I keep pinching him.  He keeps saying “ow, what are you doing that for?”.  That’s how I know it’s real.

Yes, I’m being silly.  But here is a man who adores me for all of the silly things, after years when no one else did.  So, yes.  It’s real.
And 20, 40, 50 years from now I’ll tell stories of how I knew he was the one from the moment I laid eyes on him.

But not yet.  Until then… I’ve met someone.  And I rather like him.
If you happen to see me at a show, his will be the lap I’ll be sitting on.  Please say hi!

and tell him I think he’s wonderful.

………………………………………………..Chris

Thanksgiving

rush to get there, be sure not to forget
bring the camera
and the pie
and the gift
oh, the Something Borrowed to return

arrive to open doors and arms
give hugs to friends, family
strangers I’ve known forever
the scent of cologne lingers on my shirt

table filled with mismatched platters
full of decadence
near piles of tin foil and plastic
and china dishes with plastic forks

hug and squeeze the children
my, how you’ve grown
pass babies between loving arms
generations converge

catch up with siblings
share stories around
I’ve missed you so
must do something
sometime

sink into couch
and watch life slip into slow motion

hug goodbyes
a little tighter, longer
thank you for everything

we’ll see you again soon

Delivery Lust

I never thought I’d feel thus way

I order things most every day

My handsome man in tan and cream

has always been my shipping dream

But now I fear my heart has strayed,

The FedEx man, my heartstrings played

He ran to me, a package weild’,

as toward his lover in a field

Emotions are now most perplex’t,

My heart, now stolen by FedEx.

Ode to the UPS Guy

Oh, wondrous man, give my heart pause…

you’re like a handsome Santa Claus

You bring me gifts all shapes and size,

each doorbell ring brings a surprise.

When you arrive I skip a beat

for kraft paper all tucked in neat,

with labels, an address collage —

But please don’t stash in my garage.
