A New Chapter
First, thanks to all who commented on the last newsletter — it was great to hear your thoughts and experiences! As a thank you for enduring that little digression, this post is going to be all be all about the artwork, and some very new ideas that I am just starting to fully explore.
I shared some of my science/ moon series here (speaking of which, looking for a better title, if you have any suggestions!). The rest of the work took quite a different turn. As I was researching the scientific aspects, I ran across some interesting imagery of old astronomy devices. Astrolabes and quadrants and whatnots, from as early as the 12th century. The more I saw, the more I wanted to incorporate them into my work.
Now I am not normally one to borrow imagery, public domain or otherwise. Partly because it doesn’t feel like my work, and partly because you have very little artistic control when you don’t start from scratch. Some artists thrive on that challenge, but it frustrates the rest of us. But I fell in love with this imagery. And the more I worked with it, and spent hours researching and photoshopping and restoring and tweaking, the more I realized that sometimes you write novels, and sometimes you write research papers. Each has its own authenticity and validity.
I have some of the pieces from this set for sale individually (click above), and will be gradually adding more. But if you are interested in any in particular, just let me know. In the mean time, I am gearing up for Ohio Mart, where they will be on display at the beautiful Stan Hywet in Akron OH, Sept. 30 – Oct. 3. Please stop by if you are in the area! :)
til next time,
