My name is Chris Zielski. I’ve been an artist for over 15 years, but switched to metal fairly recently when I was researching non-toxic printmaking techniques for a high school course. I ended up not teaching the class, but fell in love with creating textured surfaces in metal.
People often tell me my work is unique; I attribute it to my art education background. The art ed majors were a bit marginalized when I went to art school — the “real” artists specialized in one technique or another, while we had to learn everything. There was a bit of a “those who can’t do, teach” attitude, which always surprised me. But I’m grateful for the experiences! It shaped everything about my work, which draws from printmaking, enameling, metalworking, painting, and design disciplines.
I believe in clean design, clear strong colors, and rock solid construction. I believe that art is for everyone… that it’s not ART with a capital “A”, but rather something that people should love and enjoy in their everyday lives. And that our lives are made richer by the beauty that we create around us, whether that means Art in a frame, or something much more simple.
I believe that ideas and inspiration come from all around us, and that you don’t have to cram your senses with every art museum/ show/ book out there. In fact, I think that saturating yourself with other people’s ideas often leaves no room for your own. Sometimes you have to quiet your mind to hear yourself think.
I hope this has given you some insight into my work ~ enjoy!
